Light bones and strong muscles made gallimimus the fastest dinosaur of its day. This creature lived in dry, open plains and used its great speed to sprint away from hungry predators, such as the meat-eating tyrannosaurs.

Toothless Terror: Gallimimus' beak-like mouth enabled it to eat a varied diet. It could strip leaves from branches just as easily as it could peck at insects and lizards on the ground.

Flex-o-Neck: Like a modern-day ostrich, gallimimus' neck was long and flexible. Prey in its desert-like habitat was scarce, but swift-pecking motions gave this dinosaur the agility it needed to snatch up small, quick creatures.

The Need for Speed[]

Gallimimus Back Image

Gallimimus' body was built primarily for one thing-speed. It had to cover a lot of dry and dusty ground to find enough food to fill its belly every day. Plus, it had to run from bigger dinosaurs. With an estimated sprinting speed of a stunning 60 mph, gallimimus left bigger, slower predators eating its dust.

Keeping Watch: To help it survive in a land filled with huge predators, gallimimus lived in herds. One warning call from any member and the herd would scatter, leaving a sneaky stalker with an empty stomach.

Butterfingers: Even though gallimimus' hands were long enough to reach out for food, its three, clawed fingers were likely weak and couldn't hold anything tightly.

Egg in a Hole[]

  1. A hungry gallimimus spots a nest of eggs that has been left unattended. Being in the right place at the right time, the dinosaur digs into the soft sand to uncover these treats.
  2. Digging in to this buried treasure, the gallimimus cracks open each egg with its hard beak and gobbles down the egg's gooey goodness.
