These monsters sit on the ledges of old churches and other buildings, silently watching the world below. Then at night, legend has it, gargoyles come alive, breaking free from their stone casts and soaring through the dark skies to protect the area from evil. Some gargoyles aren't quite so nice; they threaten and frighten people.

Shapely: Gargoyles can take the shape of real animals (such as lions), legendary animals (griffins), or any combination of creatures.

On Patrol: These creatures sit on their stone perches all day long, but come to life when the sky is completely dark. Gargoyles guard the towns in which they live while people sleep; some ride high in the sky on huge wings, driving away any evil forces that try to invade.

The First Gargoyle[]

Gargoyles Back Image

Buildings all over the world have gargoyles guarding them.

Myths surrounding gargoyles began in the French village of Rouen, which was said to be terrorized by a violent, fire-breathing dragon named La Gatgouille in the 6th century. Saint Romanus heard of the dragon and went to the village. The holy man used mystical powers to subdue the beast, and it led it into town on a leash. The villagers burned the dragon-but the monster's head and neck would not burn. As a warning to other forces of evil, the people mounted the dragon's head above the door of their town hall, making it the world's first gargoyle. It is said that evil never came to Rouen again.

Bad Seed: Once in a while, a gargoyle turns against humans , hating people for giving it an isolated life outside on a building. These renegades attacks from the shadows at night, but are ultimately destroyed by other gargoyles.

French Friends[]

Some of the most famous gargoyles in the world sit atop the huge Notre Dame cathedral in Paris, France. People travel from all over the world to see these grotesque carvings. In Disney's The Hunchback of Notre Dame (loosely based on the novel by Victor Hugo), the lead character is a deformed man who lives in the church's bell tower, and becomes close friends with some of the gargoyles that come alive there.
