Weird n' Wild Creatures Wiki

In the darkest depths of the ocean, miles below the surface, gulper eels lurk. These gaping monsters swallow anything they can fit in their mouths. Most victims don't realize they're in danger until the jaws snap behind them-too late to escape.

Tail Light: On the end of the eel's tail is a glowing organ that the eel hangs in front of its mouth. Attracted by this bright display, unwary prey swims right into the eel's gaping jaws.

Open 24 Hours: The huge jaws are connected by a thin, elastic membrane and can open wide to allow the eel to swallow prey larger than the eel itself. The stomach also expands when a particularly large meal is gulped down.

Living in the Dark[]

Gulper Eels Back Image

With jaws open, the eel is always ready for a meal.

Swimming in the cold, dark depths of the ocean, the gulper eel has adapted to a hostile habitat where most other animals would perish. The pressure of the water below 3,000 feet creates a crushing force, but the eel has a slender, flexible body that bends and gives. Even its internal organs are small to avoid being crunched.

Sensitive Skin: Because the gupler eel can't see well in its dark habitat, it uses bumps along its body containing sensory organs to detect the vibrations of animals in the water. The bumps can determine the size of the animal, and whether the eel should attack or flee.

Deadly Dose: With a pea-sized brain that weighs only 0.0007 ounces, gulper eels don't do much thinking.

Leave the Light On[]

  1. Lurking in the darkest parts of the ocean, the gulper eel attracts a small fish with the glow of its pulsating tail lure.
  2. The eel moves the lure in front of its mouth, and the prey curiously follows it. Before the small fish knows what happens, the ambush is sprung and the eel closes its jaws around the unlucky victim.

Trading Card[]
