"Only now do we know the true story- Megarachne was a giant prehistoric sea scorpion."

It was a gentle creature that fed only on leaves and twigs-yet it was as tall as a two-story house and weighed more than 15 tons! It was Indricotherium, the largest mammal to ever walk the Earth. This mighty beast's incredible height rivaled that of the tallest dinosaurs.

Chewing to the Top: Indricotherium had two long teeth protruding from its upper jaw. They were probably longer than a kid's hand. These teeth made it easy for the great beast to strip foliage from the tops of tall trees.

Three of a Kind: Indricotherium was an ungulate, which means "mammal with hooves." This creature had three toes on each hoof, just like its closest living relative, the rhinoceros.

Biggest of the Big[]

This Indricotherium skull measures more than four feet long!

Indricotherium first roamed the Earth about 35 million years after the last dinosaurs were wiped out. The vast grasslands that appeared for the first time in modern-day Asia led to the emergence of huge beasts known as megafauna (the Latin word meaning "large animals"). The king among these giant mammals was Indricotherium-it would have dwarfed even the mighty T-rex!

Big Daddy: Indricotherium had the same feeding advantages as the modern giraffe. Its height and long neck enabled it to reach the leaves and branches from the tops of tall trees that other animals couldn't reach.

Can't Touch This: Indricotherium was so gigantic that no predator would dare to challenge it. Babies were vulnerable to attack, however, so mothers kept them close by for the first few years of their lives.

Timeline[]

Indricotherium lived from 30 to 25 million years ago, during the Tertiary Period.
