Viking legend describes Jörmungand as a sea serpent that's so big it stretched all the way around the world. One of the biggest and deadliest monsters ever imagined, this gigantic beast was always in a bad mood and could cause a series of natural disasters at will. Plus, Jörmungand was venomous. Legend has it that this beast still roams the seas and will meet its doom at the hands of the god Thor.
Poison Breath: When this monster breathed, it exhaled clouds of poisonous gas that could instantly kill any mortal creature. Plus, Jörmungand could spit deadly venom from its huge fangs.
Big Boy: According to the legend, Jörmungand grew by huge amounts every day when it was young. The full-grown serpent could wrap its body around the world and still put the end of its tail in its mouth!
The End[]

Legendary Norse prophecies tell of a colossal battle between Jörmungand and the great god Thor (left) when the world comes to an end. During a future fight between the gods and a race of giants, the beastly serpent will enter the battle, rising from the sea, spewing poison clouds and flooding the Earth. Thor, whose lifelong quest is to kill Jörmungand, will beat the monster to death with his mighty hammer. However, Jörmungand will also manage to bite Thor, who will be killed by the serpent's venom after walking away from its lifeless body.
Angry Gods: Thor's anger at Jörmungand came from an encounter when the serpent took the shape of a huge cat. The god was challenged to lift the cat and, unaware that it was Jörmungand in disguise, caused earthquakes and floods around the world when he picked it up.
Gods of Fishing[]
- In one of his attempts to kill Jörmungand, Thor brings along a giant named Hymir. The god ties the head of a huge bull to a rope and casts the line into the depths, hoping to lure the great serpent to the surface.
- The ploy works, but as Jörmungand's immense body breaks over the waves, Hymir becomes frightened. As Thor battles the monster, the giant uses his knife to cut the line, sending Jörmungand back to the depths, and angering Thor.
