Pachycephalosaurus was a plant-eating dinosaur, but also was well built for battle. This creature had a crown of solid bone that was surrounded by spikes on both sides of its head. Head-butting brawls broke out between rival males in a herd; when danger was near, this dinosaur could deliver a lethal blow to predators but probably preferred to run.

Fresh Salad: This dinosaur had sharp, serrated teeth in its cheeks that shredded plants into an easy-to-swallow pulp. Small, spiky teeth in the front of its mouth stripped leaves from branches and crunched up tough seeds.

Spiked: Pachycephalosaurus had small, bony bumps on its skull. These bumps grew into long spikes on the back of the creature's head, which protected it from the biting jaws of enemies.

A Real Bonehead[]

Pachycephalosaurus Back Image

Pachycephalosaurus' skull (left) was topped with a 10-inch thick dome made of solid bone. Many experts think this dinosaur used its head as a battering ram against others in a herd to establish dominance, either slamming into the side of a rival or crashing in head-on collisions with them. The bones in pachycephalosaurus' neck locked together when the dinosaur lowered its head and helped absorb the impact.

Smell of Fear: Instead of using its domed skull against large predators such as T-rex, pachycepahlosaurus relied on its speed to outrun danger. A keen sense of smell allowed this dino to detect enemies and take off before they got too close.

Old Timber: This creature walked on two legs most of the time, but probably went down on all fours when eating so it could feed on low-growing plants.

Timeline[]

Pachycephalosaurus lived 70 to 65 million years ago, during the late Cretaceous Period.
