General Rules
- Do not do anything that would get you banned from Fandom.
- Do not harass users in the comments of the pages, the discussions, or on their message walls.
- Do not edit other people's pages.
- Do not vandalize the pages in any way. As a somewhat obscure series with relatively little media online about it, doing so will result in banning to keep the wiki as faithful to the series as possible.
- If you have any suggestions, ask a moderator or admin first. If this idea is supported, we can help make it easier and more organized to pull off.
Editing the Wiki
Images
- Do not upload images with inappropriate content (nudity, etc.).
- Do keep in mind that some of the card images can be a bit violent.
- If off-topic images are uploaded, do not add them to pages. Blogs, comments and discussion posts are fine.
- Do not add images that already exist on the wiki, unless it is of higher quality. If you are adding higher quality images, feel free to say so.
- Do not overwrite existing images, or use the placeholder images for card illustrations and photos to upload unrelated images. You are free, however, to help add missing images with placeholder names to help fill pages that need them.
- Do not give images inappropriate names.
- Images put on pages must be relevant to the cards themselves:
- Only include images found on the cards themselves.
- For the overhaul of the wiki, pages will need cropped versions of the images and illustrations on the backs of the cards. Please follow the Project Overhaul example pages, such as T-rex.
Adding Pages
Adding new pages is most likely not going to be necessary, unless somehow a card was missed or it is significantly and verifiably linked to the wiki's contents. Please, ask an admin before doing so; an admin can create the page for you instead. Do not add original ideas for "cards" as pages to the wiki, as this wiki is for cataloging the original ‘’Weird n' Wild’’ series. You can do this stuff on blog posts, but the pages are for official content only.
Editing Existing Pages
In general, the goal of the wiki is to transcribe and document the Weird n' Wild Creatures cards series. Please keep edits relevant to the cards and the pages. When editing a page, do not change the transcribed elements unless there is an error which is not present on the card.
Typos on Cards
If there is a typo on the card itself, adding a [sic] at the end of a typo can help indicate the error is from the source, and you're not paraphrasing a quotation. This goes for scientific names, too- whether they're a typo or not accurate to the species on the card. If a typo is made by a transcriber but not on the card, you can fix it.
Outdated Cards
If a card is scientifically outdated in any way, such as Seismosaurus, do not change the corresponding transcribed card portions themselves. Instead, please point this out in the trivia, with as much information as possible to clarify why or how the card is outdated, and add a source if possible. There is a template (called "Outdated") and a category ("Outdated Cards") that can be put on the pages as well.
Trivia
The trivia exists to point out continuity between cards, as well as errors both in the writing and in the facts. As such, things that point out stuff such as:
- Themes or coincidences in the order of cards (like Morgawr and Owlman) or the numerical orders (both snapping turtles, the last of each major classification, and so on).
- Species connections (i.e. Tegu and Whiptail Lizard) or other connections (such as the Nagas root word being used in the scientific name for some featured snakes) between featured creatures.
- Along with this, connections between cards such as mentions of featured creatures elsewhere.
- Specific examples of species focused on or mentioned on cards if the card's name is broad or features multiple scientific names (i.e. Poison-Dart Frogs or Mink);
- When the card's section titles reference popular media (i.e. Emperor Scorpion using the Beach Boys' song, Good Vibrations). This can range from direct title references, to song lyrics or famous quotes that are (reasonably) present on the card.
- References to pieces of media on a card in other ways (such as the Green Iguana referencing its use in a movie).
- Errors in spelling, text formatting, or scientific and other knowledge that has become outdated since publishing.
- Information about sister series Wildlife Explorer.
- If you know of any other series which share the illustrations, please inform an admin first before adding, and show visual proof. There are many out there, and it's welcome to add them so long as you can confirm it first, which should be easy to do.
- Do not:
- Add information about media outside of the Weird n' Wild or Wildlife Explorer (when applicable) series.
- This includes adding trivia about media which has come out after the series, or is not mentioned on the cards. For example, the Mummy card mentions the Boris Karloff film, but mentioning Hotel Transylvania would not be appropriate.
- Add references to common phrases that can be found on the card (i.e. "That's a Wrap" on the Mummy card).
- Add information on species not featured in the series in any way.
- Add information about media outside of the Weird n' Wild or Wildlife Explorer (when applicable) series.
Categories
Adding categories to pages can be messy, so adding them should not be done without considering the following:
- Does it concretely fit two or more cards without being essentially covered by a larger category? For example, a category for Ants covers a broad number of cards, but "Reef Sharks" only covers two, and those two cards are already covered by Sharks and Cartilaginous Fish as well.
- Is it too broad, without categorizing in a scientific way?
- For example, a generic “Desert” or “Ocean” category covers too many things that can be covered by more accurate categories.
- Another example: “TV Monsters" covers potentially anything that has been shown as a monster on TV, and could be argued to include half of the cards, but is not relevant, especially since most of the Monsters of the Mind do not originate from more modern media.
- For a positive example, categories such as "Cnidarian" or "Cards with Broad Classifications" tie into the scientific classifications (or lack of use of them), and is useful for cataloguing animals and card content respectively.
- When adding categories to Monsters of the Mind, please stick to their origin point (Greek myths, folklore, etc.), and avoid categorizing based off of secondary media after their debut.
- This also applies to media post-release of the Weird n' Wild series.
- No fan categorizations based on what you like- no "_'s favorite cards" or something similar. You are more than allowed to put this on your profile or a blog post.
- When categorizing cards based on location, sometimes repeating categories might be a bit messy and confusing- try to limit it to countries, and maybe states in some exceptions. Also, for saltwater animals, stick to oceans, not continents, unless the animal is known to consistently swim into freshwater like the Bull Shark.
- Modern-day animals do not need time period categories, even if they were alive at the time. This can clutter pages with lots of categories.
- With Monsters of the Mind, don’t add them to scientific categories. Due to their mix-and-match nature, if nothing else, this can be confusing, and never accurate. It can also lead to debates on what a creature "might" be biologically, which will never be possible to prove.
- When categorizing creatures as venomous or poisonous, remember:
- Poison is if you (or a predator) are eating the animal;
- Venom is if you (or a prey) are being eaten by the animal;
- Every Toxic Terrors snake in this series is venomous.
- Toxic Terrors is only for cards which are categorized in that group by the series. If a creature not in Toxic Terrors is mentioned to be toxic or venomous on their card, do not classify them in the group's category.
- that said, animals which are venomous and poisonous can be added to said respective categories even if they’re not Toxic Terrors, so long as their card(s) mentions it or there is external proof they are either of the above.
- If adding a category description, don’t simply copy and paste without crediting. It can be tricky to write something entirely unique from information online, but it’s better to try to paraphrase (with credit!). Do feel free to write them if possible, however.
