In the frigid northern regions of North America, legends tell of a man-eating monster that prowls the snowy forests. The wendigo stalks its victims silently from behind, disappearing if the prey turns around. Some of the strongest wendigoes have the power to summon wild beasts to help in attacks or even the ability to control to weather.

Heart Of Ice: The wendigo's heart is clearly visible through its chest. Cold and blue, the organ pumps icy blood through the creature's chest. Only shattering this heart with a silver stake can stop the beast.

Ugly Mug: The wendigo's body is haggardly thin and its face is disfigured. The monster uses sharp, distorted teeth to bite through the flesh of its victims.

Frontier Hannibal Lecter[]

Wendigo back1

Native Americans told campfire tales about wendigo.

According to myths passed along by Native Americans from the north, the wendigo is a monster that eats only human flesh. Settlers and Indians often became isolated in freezing regions of North America, and sometimes had to resort to cannibalism to survive. Legend has it that when people eat human meat, an evil spirit enters their bodies, kills them and then brings them back to life with a craving for human flesh. Thus the wendigo is born, and sets off into the woods in an unending search for its only prey.

Elemental: Wendigoes are said to have several supernatural powers at their fingertips. They move like the wind, and some can summon wild animals to help them attack victims. The most powerful wendigoes can even control snow, wind and water to create blizzards and floods.

Mental Monster: Algonquin Indians and other northern tribes each had their own idea of what the wendigo was. Many thought it was a phantom rather than a physical creature. Every tribe's name for the monster translates to "evil spirit that eats mankind."

Wendigo's Watching[]

  1. Wendigo4
As a trapper ventures deep into woods, he is suddenly stricken with the feeling that he's being followed. He turns quickly, but the wendigo that's stalking him disappears. The man hears rustling bushes and snapping twigs behind him and panics.
  2. Running through the snow, the man trips over a root. The wendigo sees its chance to pounce. The man shoots at the monster, but his bullet passes straight through the wendigo's heart without effect. It looks like this unlucky trapper has seen his first, and last, wendigo.
