Yowies are the ferocious Australian relatives of North America's legendary Bigfoot. The yowies' huge, hairy bodies and gigantic canine teeth give the beasts a frightful appearance, but these creatures supposedly only harm an occasional cow, sheep or kangaroo. So many sightings of yowies have been reported in and around the Outback that it is thought they might be real animals-a link between apes and humans.

What Big Teeth: Some stories say that the yowie has long, tusk-like canine teeth. The creature mostly eats plants, but will sink these teeth into livestock for the occasional high protein meal.

You Hairy, Man: Aborigines (native Australians) call this primitive creature the "big hairy man." Yowies walk on two feet and are covered in long fur, a kind of mix of ape and human.

Attack of the Yowies[]

An alleged cast of a yowie footprint shows its big foot has five toes. Other footprints have shown four toes.

Europeans began reporting sightings of the yowie as soon as they settled in Australia, but the beast's history can be traced back further than that. Aboriginal stories of the yowie were told hundreds of years before Australia's colonization. In fact, some legends speak of a war between yowies and aborigines. The yowies were bigger and extremely fast, but the aborigines had primitive weapons and managed to push the yowies back into remote areas of the continent.

Stinker: Most accounts of the yowie tell of it having a terrible odor coming from its breath and hairy body. People supposedly have been made sick by the stench.

Screamer: The 8-foot-tall yowie doesn't like visitors. Reports say that the beast will charge after people who invade its territory and let out a shrieking roar.

Yapping at Yowie![]

Neighborhoods in Australia are sometimes built very close to the uninhabited Outback, which is where the yowie is said to live. The beast usually comes out after dark, and a curious dog investigates a late-night rustling. Yowies aren't known to be vicious by nature, but, if hungry, the barking dog would make a nice snack for the giant creature.
